Practical Winter Clothes!

Hey All! Hope you had an awesome weekend!

A few girlfriends and I went to see Company XIV's Snow White yesterday at the Bond Street Theatre. The fact that they gave out free apples and bottled water only added to their awesomeness. Company XIV put a Brothers Grimm-esque twist with opera/circus/dance to the world renowned bedtime story. The result was a mind-blowing, sitting-on-the-edge-of-the-seat show that gave me chills down my spine. The actress that played Snow White and a few other characters came out after for some photo ops with the audience, and of course, we had to take a picture with Snow White!

Thank you, Nikki, for organizing this!

Over the weekend, the temperature dropped quite immensely. Even though I could get away with wearing a simple sweater and leather jacket now, this whole getup would not be practical as we etch deeper into the winter.

Last night, I wore a pair of fleece leggings underneath those neon pink trousers in the photo above and it kept me warm and snug all day and night. As much as I love dressing the way I dress, I have come to realize that being stylish and being practical are like oil and water during the winter.

Sure, the wool coat looks really good, and that parka looks really fashionable, but all I see are these entry points where the wind could go in: up the sleeves, down the neck, through the buttons... Brr... So, what's the ideal winter gear? This ain't going to look fashionable, but it sure as heck will keep you warm...and possibly even hot ;)

My secret is fleece along with a durable shell such as this:

Preferably the shell would be waterproof so you can wear it in the snow and rain, as well as breathable so your sweat won't get trapped underneath all the material and get yourself sick that way. The best thing about this combination is, you don't have to wear too much underneath and walk around like a robot because you're all bulked up! Plus, you can get a simple fleece from Old Navy for $10, like the one below :)

Hope you guys will find this useful! If you have other suggestions, leave them in the comment below!

Until next time, take good care and stay warm :)

Florals + Leather!

Hey All! Hope you guys had a great weekend :)

Thank you so much for being so patient. Without further delay, let's deconstruct my outfit from last Friday!

My objective is practicality before style/fashion, because as you all know, sometimes being stylish & fashionable doesn't mean that it's practical...at all. (Hm, I guess that disqualifies me as a fashion lover + self-made stylist! Ha...) That said, last Friday's temperature hovered around mid-30's to high-40's. Cold, but not too cold. I'd rather be on the safe side and add an extra layer that I could always take off if needed, especially since I had planned on being out that night.

First, I started with a long-sleeve shirt under a sheer, lightweight floral maxi dress with pockets (always love skirts/dresses with pockets!). Then, to add warmth, I wore tights underneath and layered a blue sweater on top. Of course, I couldn't go without a scarf, and in this case, two scarves! To finish off, I went to my hefty leather motorcycle jacket.

All those layers kept me warm and snug throughout the night walking all over the city and all our pit stops! Otafuku, Yakitori, Saint's Alp Teahouse, and finally... Artichoke Pizza! Seriously, that's the most awesomest hole-in-the-wall pizza joint ever. Ever. I love that they close at 5 in the morning, not that I'd ever be there that late...heh.

OK, so where did I buy my stuff?

Long-sleeve shirt (that you couldn't see): Old Navy, around $10
Pocketed floral maxi dress: Positive Greater Than Negative on Etsy.com, $28 plus $5.95 shipping
Tights (that you couldn't see): Old Navy, around $10
Blue sweater: Beacon's Closet, $13 (Love Beacon's! Thank you, my Watermelon friend, for introducing me to that wonderful place!)
Tan scarf: H&M, around $10, I think...
Silk scarf: Gift from Berlin, Germany (thank you, my always stylish friend Nikki!)
Leather jacket: Cheap Jack's Vintage Clothing, around $150 (It was actually brand new.)
Brown ankle boots: LL Bean, $80

I'm normally a very, very cheap person. Honestly, it broke my heart to hand over the $150 for that jacket and punch in my credit card number for those $80 LL Bean ankle boots. It also helped that I had a steady income when I bought those things, and I must say, they were good buys and I foresee using them for many years ahead. Perhaps I could even pass them down to my future children, if I decide to have children, and even then, maybe...just maybe.

So, what do you think of the outfit? Awesome? Just OK? Wacky? Borderline psychotic? Leave comments below! And if you have any photos of your outfits, I want to see them!

PS. AndreasChoice made an ingenious video on how to make your own hairspray from simple ingredients that you may already have at home. I can't wait to try this out!

Enjoy! She has so many other awesome tutorials as well so check them out :)

See you all next time :D Until then, stay warm and take good care!

Hello!

Finally, a new post!

After nearly four years, I'm finally taking action, albeit microscopic action, to become a freelance stylist. I've always watched the beauty and fashion gurus on Youtube with eyes green with envy. They're doing what they love and above all, they're inspiring. I wanted to do the same thing and I'd tell everyone around me that being a fashion stylist is my dream, but I never took the first step. I'd tell myself, "Working full-time is tiring and 24 hours a day just isn't enough," or "I'll never succeed."

Well, I stopped whining and I don't care whether I'll succeed or not. After all, I just want to be able to do what I love to do and help others! Now that I'm not working full-time, I'm taking advantage of the time in between sending out resumes and going on interviews to start making my dream into reality, which leads to...

...if you have any suggestions on how I can improve, please, Please, PLEASE let me know! I'm open to all advice, suggestions, and any fashion-related stories you could share! Thank you so, so, so much!
